Elm Leaf Beetle
Elm Tree Register
The presence of the Elm Leaf Beetle (ELB) was discovered in Glenorchy in March 2008.The ELB is capable of defoliating Elms, which if left untreated could seriously weaken and may eventually kill the trees.
How to recognize if Elm Leaf Beetles are in your tree?
In winter the beetles hibernate under the bark and other sheltered places so identification through summer is best. In early summer ‘shot-holes’ in leaves indicate beetle presence. After their eggs hatch in November the larvae produced eat the green matter of leaves leaving a skeleton of leaf veins.
One of the keys in managing the spread of the ELB throughout Glenorchy is to develop a complete register of Elm trees within our city. If you have a tree or trees on your property which you are unsure off or would like a copy of the information booklet please contact Council 62166779 or visit www.vicnet.net.au/~fote for the information booklet ‘Our Elms Need Friends’
