Cultural Festivals and Events
Local events are a great way to bring people together, celebrate local activities, the seasons and our community achievements.
The Arts & Cultural Development Section supports cultural events and festivals in Glenorchy:
We provide assistance in the coordination of major cultural events including Carols by Candlelight and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Under the Stars as well as smaller events such as a series of outdoor concerts, Summer Music in Tolosa Park.
We also provide advice and assistance to community groups, Community Precinct Committees and other local associations, wishing to develop their own community cultural events such as the Austins Ferry Carnival of Kites presented by the Austins Ferry/Granton Community Precinct.
Major Event Assistance
Carols by Candlelight is an annual community Christmas event organised by a community based committee with the support of Council and the Lions Club of Glenorchy. Usually held on the second Saturday in December at the Tolosa Park Soundshell, this twilight concert is a popular seasonal event for Glenorchy residents. Choral groups, choirs, interested performers and event volunteers, wishing to participate in the event, should register their interest with the Community Cultural Development Officer on 03 6216 6312.
Symphony Under the Stars at Tolosa Park is produced each year by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra with the assistance of Glenorchy City Council. Usually held on the second Saturday in February, the twilight concert is the biggest outdoor classical music event in Tasmania.
The Arts & Cultural Development Section provides assistance and advice to groups wishing to run their own events. For example we have assisted three country music groups to establish an annual concert at Tolosa Park.
