Policies and Procedures
POLICY is "a guide for rationalizing a particular course of action"- e.g. it explains "why" Council would decide to act in a particular way. Council Policy is often driven by Council's obligation to comply with legislative requirements, or other formal authorities or codes, such as a Code of Ethics or defined community expectations.
PROCEDURES outline "the method through which a policy objective is accomplished" - e.g. they explain "how" Council will act in conducting its business. Council Procedures document the steps taken to ensure compliance and/or to achieve a particular result while conducting Council business.
At Glenorchy City Council, Policy and Procedures can be further categorised into "corporate" or "public" policy or procedures. "Corporate" policy and procedures are generally utilised inside an organisation to manage staff, administration, etc. "Public" policy or procedures are generally used to manage Council's interaction with residents, businesses, community organisations and State and Federal Governments/Agencies.
The Policy and Procedures listed on this site are generally those identified as "public" - i.e. they are those policies and procedures which people outside Council need to be able to access to interact with Council.
