Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey today thanked the many people who attended a candlelight vigil for the victims of the horrific flooding in Nepal held at Montrose Foreshore last night.
Mayor Hickey said more than 250+ people gathered to pay their respects to the victims as well as share a prayer of hope for the many people still missing and unaccounted for.
“The extent of this natural disaster has sent shockwaves around the world, and its impact has been acutely felt in our community which many Nepalese people now call home.
“On behalf of Glenorchy City Council I convey our deepest sympathy to anyone who has been impacted by this terrible event and offer our support and mateship to the broader Nepalese community.
“The Nepalese community is a very active and proud community within the City of Glenorchy, and last night’s vigil demonstrated how many people are feeling a sense of grief and loss.
“With such large-scale devastation, the coming days and weeks loom as an extremely difficult period, and I want those people who are impacted by this event to know we are standing with them.
“As Tasmanians, we know what it is like to have to recover from natural disasters. We know that task is easier when we do it together, shoulder-to-shoulder, and I want the Nepalese community to know that we are standing right beside them through this tragedy,” she said.
