{"id":8630,"date":"2026-08-28T11:51:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T01:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gcc.tas.gov.au\/?p=8630"},"modified":"2026-08-28T11:54:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T01:54:43","slug":"council-stands-with-nepalese-community-after-devastating-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gcc.tas.gov.au\/ar\/2026\/08\/council-stands-with-nepalese-community-after-devastating-floods\/","title":{"rendered":"Council stands with Nepalese community after devastating floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey today extended her deepest sympathies on behalf of Glenorchy City Council to Tasmania\u2019s Nepalese community in the wake of the horrific flooding in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayor Hickey said the Nepalese community was the largest migrant community in Glenorchy, and many people would be feeling the impacts of this disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would like to convey our sympathy to anyone who has been impacted by this terrible event and offer our support and mateship to the broader Nepalese community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Nepalese community is a very active and proud community within the City of Glenorchy, and I have no doubt this event will be very distressing for many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile our Nepalese community has made Glenorchy their home, I know many retain strong connections to Nepal and their families who still live there. With such large-scale devastation, the coming days and weeks loom as an extremely difficult period, and I want those people who are impacted by this event to know we are standing with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayor Hickey said Council had contacted representatives of the Nepalese community directly to convey Council\u2019s sympathy and offer of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will be supporting the Nepalese community\u2019s efforts to fundraise and provide money for international aid, and Council will share further information how the public can get involved in these efforts in due course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs Tasmanians, we know what it is like to have to recover from natural disasters.
