Glenorchy CBD Speed Limit Change

Glenorchy CBD speed limit changes to 40 km/ph

By the end of September 2020, the speed limit on Main Road, Glenorchy (between Eady Street and Barry Street), Peltro Street and part of Regina St will be changing from 50km/ph zones to 40 km/ph zones. This has been part of the CBD Revitalisation Project goals and in response to community support of the reduction of speed limits in recent years.

The Glenorchy CBD is undergoing an exciting transformation to its main shopping areas with more open spaces to be enjoyed by our community as they shop, socialise and relax. One element of this vision is to reduce the impact of vehicles in the main shopping strip to allow for increased safety and enjoyment for pedestrians in the area.

Council is working with the Department of State Growth to facilitate a smooth transition in these areas, works will be underway during September to upgrade signage in the area.

Please ensure that you obey all signage and traffic directions in place over the next few weeks and into the future as these may have changed since your last visit to Glenorchy. The graphic below details the final speed zones for your convenience.

If you have any further questions, please see the FAQs below where we have addressed key topics surrounding the change. Please do not hesitate to contact us on 6216 6800 or via email gccmail@gcc.tas.gov.au if there is something more we can answer for you.

Speed Limit Change FAQs

Why is Council changing the speed limit?

A key goal of the CBD Revitalisation Project is to reduce the impact of vehicles through the main shopping strip in Glenorchy transforming the space into a bustling hub of retail activity with more pedestrian friendly zones, additional seating, wider footpaths and crossings.

A lower speed limit will increase safety for motorists and pedestrians as well as contributing to a calmer and slower environment where shoppers can relax and enjoy spending time in Glenorchy.

During the initial community consultation for the CBD Project, in 2016, there was significant support for a speed reduction - 82% of survey respondents listed reducing the speed limit in the CBD to 40kmh as being important or very important.

When is this happening?

The changes, including new speed zone signage, will be in effect as of the end of September 2020. Please obey all signs and directions in place and be alert as conditions may have changed since the last time you were in Glenorchy.

Can I still drive through the CBD?

Yes. The Northbound lanes through Main Road Glenorchy remain open, small sections of the Southbound lane between Barry St and Peltro Street are still closed due to ongoing project roadworks. You can read more about the overall CBD Project here

Is this a permanent change?

Yes. The 40 km/ph will now be a permanent speed zone through Main Road, Glenorchy and Peltro Street (see purple highlighted roads). Please view the graphic below to see the different speed zones in Glenorchy’s CBD.
