Wastewater Treatment Systems

Wastewater treatment systems are used for properties that can't connect to the town sewer.

The systems collect wastewater from your home or business. They store the soil waste, and clean the water and release it back into the ground.

Choosing a system

There are lots of different types of wastewater treatment systems and each one works differently. Septic tanks separate water and solids only. Aerated wastewater treatment systems do the same as septic tanks, and more, to produce cleaner waste water.

Before you pick a wastewater treatment system you need to talk to a wastewater specialist. They will help you choose the best system for your property by doing some tests. They will also give you a report to give to Council.

Applying for a permit

Wastewater treatment systems need a permit from Council before they can go into the ground. You need to fill in the application form No. 3 located in the Department of Justice site (external link), pay a fee and give us your specialist’s report. We will assess your application and report.

The permit will have a list of things that you need to do. When you have your permit your plumber needs to tell us when they are installing the system.
