We have heard community concerns about smart glasses and other devices that can discreetly photograph, film or record people.
Everyone should feel safe using Council facilities, particularly swimming pools, change rooms, toilets, sporting facilities and places used by children and families.
At the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool, the Conditions of Entry will restrict cameras, smart glasses and other recording-capable devices. Signs will be displayed at the entrance and throughout the facility, and pool staff will monitor compliance.
Council is also reviewing its policies, conditions of use and signage across other Council facilities, including sporting clubrooms and change rooms.
Our approach will include:
- no photography or recording in change rooms, toilets or other private areas;
- restrictions on recording-capable devices where their use may affect people’s privacy or safety;
- clear authority for staff to intervene where necessary;
- appropriate arrangements for authorised photography; and
- reasonable provision for people who use assistive technology.
In open public places such as parks and playgrounds, family photography is common and generally reasonable. However, people should not photograph or record others in a way that is intrusive, causes concern or compromises the safety and privacy of children and other facility users.
Technology is changing quickly. Council is taking practical steps to ensure our rules and signage keep pace and that our facilities remain safe, welcoming and inclusive.
