Parking Sensors FAQ

Parking sensors are currently installed within selected parking areas in the Glenorchy CBD. Locations may change over time as Council upgrades or expands the parking management system.

Current parking sensor locations are maintained on Council’s live website and may include on-street and off-street public parking areas within the CBD.

Electronic parking sensors are installed beneath the surface of selected marked parking bays throughout the CBD. The sensors detect when a vehicle enters or leaves a parking space and record occupancy information in real time.

The data collected by the sensors assists Council to:

• Monitor parking occupancy and turnover
• Identify when parking time limits may have been exceeded
• Understand parking demand and usage patterns
• Improve parking planning and resource management
• Provide real-time information about available parking spaces

Parking sensor technology helps Council manage high-demand parking areas more effectively and supports fair access to short-term parking for all users.

The sensors are incredibly accurate. They have been tried and tested across Australia and used in many capital cities. Each sensor is calibrated to the bay that it sits within to monitor the different types of vehicles it will detect. The sensors are constantly monitored and tested to ensure they are working properly.

Council is trialling these sensors to identify efficiencies in how we deliver parking and compliance, and to gather traffic data to inform our Parking Policy and improve turnover for local businesses.
