A permit helps ensure that footpath trading activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintain safe and accessible pedestrian access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet Council standards for safety, amenity and presentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimise impacts on neighbouring businesses, residents and public infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support accessible movement for people of all abilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Types of Trading are Permitted?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Outside dining<\/strong> \u2014 tables and chairs on the footpath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sale of goods<\/strong> \u2014 outdoor tables with products for sale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Portable signage<\/strong> \u2014 A-frame signs for business advertising<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A permit is required for outside dining and sale of goods. Portable signage does not require a permit but must still comply with the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Permit conditions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Permit approvals may include conditions relating to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approved trading areas and operating hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum pedestrian clearances and accessibility requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Furniture standards and maintenance obligations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public liability insurance requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety and operational considerations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Council generally requires a clear pedestrian accessway of at least 1.5 metres to be maintained at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fees<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Current permit fees are available in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcc.tas.gov.au\/ja\/%e3%81%82%e3%81%aa%e3%81%9f%e3%81%ae%e8%a9%95%e8%ad%b0%e4%bc%9a\/finances\/fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council\u2019s Fees and Charges schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for a footpath trading permit, complete the Footpath Trading Application form available on Council\u2019s Forms page and submit it with the applicable fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications must include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A site plan showing the proposed footpath trading area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Details of furniture, equipment or displays to be used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any other supporting information requested by Council<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Read the Policy and Guidelines<\/strong> \u2014 Familiarise yourself with the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Footpath-Trading-Policy.pdf\">Footpath Trading Policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Footpath-Trading-Guidelines.pdf\">Guidelines<\/a> before applying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Complete an Application<\/strong> \u2014 Submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Application-for-Outside-Dining-and-Sale-of-Goods-on-Council-Footpaths.pdf\">Outside Dining and Sale of Goods application form<\/a> to Council via <a href=\"mailto:gccmail@gcc.tas.gov.au\">email<\/a> or our Service Centre.
