The management of these waterways is important for preserving wildlife corridors, improving water quality in the Derwent, providing flood protection and preserving habitat for numerous aquatic and riparian species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>River Derwent water sampling<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We take regular water samples from the River Derwent as part of the Derwent Estuary Program (DEP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you catch fish from the River Derwent, it is important to know that there are some health issues with eating wild shellfish or fish that you catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>View more information on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derwentestuary.org.au\/fishing-and-seafood-safety\/\">Derwent Estuary Program\u2019s seafood safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of our program, we collect samples for a 4-month period from December to March from a number of sites including Windermere and Elwick bays. Every year these results are evaluated and included in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derwentestuary.org.au\/\">State of the Derwent annual report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public swimming pools and spas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pools and spas open to the public must be tested for microbiological quality monthly. Proprietors are responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keeping a logbook of all water quality records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arranging water sample collection and submitting them to the Department of Health&#8217;s Public Health Laboratory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining chemical parameters in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.tas.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/Recreational_Water_Quality_Guidelines_DoHTasmania2007.pdf\">Recreational Water Quality Guidelines 2007<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Windermere Beach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Windermere Beach is Glenorchy&#8217;s only designated swimming beach. Council monitors its microbiological quality weekly from December through March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current water quality ratings are available at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.derwentestuary.org.au\/beach-watch\">Derwent Estuary Program&#8217;s Beach Watch site<\/a> \u2014 it&#8217;s recommended you check before swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid swimming if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Beach Watch provides precautionary advice, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There has been significant rainfall in the past three days, as stormwater runoff can carry contaminants into the water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If a water sample returns an unsafe result, a retest is taken.
