The Committee\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfmc.tas.gov.au\/publications-resources\">Bushfire Risk Management Plan<\/a>&nbsp;shapes how Council approaches mitigation locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Council\u2019s approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Council\u2019s bushfire mitigation program began in 2017 and is now guided by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gcc.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GCC_BMS-20-30-endorsed-2025.pdf\">Bushfire Mitigation Strategy 2020\u20132030<\/a>. This strategy takes a risk-based approach to managing bushfire-prone vegetation on Council land, helping to protect life and property by assessing current practices and identifying where improvement is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council also has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gcc.assets.ionatahosting.net\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Bushfire-Mitigation-Policy-September-2021.pdf\">Bushfire Mitigation Policy<\/a>&nbsp;that supports this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bushfire risk management is an important part of protecting people, property, infrastructure and the natural environment. Council works with emergency services, land managers and the community to identify bushfire-prone areas and undertake mitigation activities that help reduce the risk and impact of bushfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Council is responsible for managing bushfire risk on land and assets under its care and control, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Council-owned parks and reserves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Road reserves and nature strips in bushfire-prone areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Council buildings and facilities located in bushfire-prone areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Selected areas of public open space and bushland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Council\u2019s role focuses on managing vegetation and fuel loads on Council-managed land to help reduce the intensity and spread of bushfires where practicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working with emergency services<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Council works closely with the Tasmania Fire Service and other agencies to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify areas of higher bushfire risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan and prioritise mitigation activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordinate fuel reduction programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support emergency preparedness and response planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share information with the community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bushfire management activities are guided by risk assessments, environmental considerations and operational conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planned burns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Planned burns, also known as prescribed burns, are an important tool used to reduce fuel loads in bushland and help lower bushfire risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council may undertake planned burns in consultation with the Tasmania Fire Service and relevant specialists when weather and environmental conditions are suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planned burns are carefully planned and managed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce accumulated vegetation and fuel loads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower the intensity of potential bushfires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help protect nearby communities and infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain access and operational safety in bushland areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Burns are conducted under controlled conditions and are monitored to minimise risks and impacts where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notification of planned burns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Council aims to notify nearby residents and affected communities before planned burns take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notifications may include information about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Burn locations and timing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoke impacts and safety advice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary closures or restricted access areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes due to weather or operational conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoke from planned burns may still affect nearby areas depending on weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vegetation management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to planned burns, Council undertakes a range of vegetation management activities to help reduce bushfire risk across Council-managed land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These activities may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mechanical slashing and mowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hand clearing and pruning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removal of excess vegetation and debris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing invasive plant species that increase fire risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining fire access tracks where appropriate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazard reduction works around Council facilities and infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Vegetation management programs are prioritised based on risk, environmental considerations and available resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balancing bushfire management and environmental values<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Council aims to balance bushfire risk reduction with the protection of environmental and natural values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bushland areas often contain important native vegetation, wildlife habitat and biodiversity values.
