Bees play an important role in pollination, biodiversity and food production, and many residents choose to keep bees as a hobby or for small-scale honey production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping bees within the Glenorchy municipality is permitted where hives are appropriately managed and comply with relevant Council requirements and Tasmanian legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rules for urban beekeeping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents wishing to keep bees in residential or urban areas must ensure their hives are managed responsibly to minimise impacts on neighbouring properties and public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key requirements include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hives must be located an appropriate distance from fences, boundaries and neighbouring dwellings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bee flight paths should be directed upward using fencing, screens or vegetation to reduce interactions with neighbours and pedestrians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bees must have access to a reliable on-site water source to discourage them from seeking water from neighbouring properties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hives must be maintained in a healthy condition to minimise swarming and disease risks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beekeepers must comply with Council by-laws and the requirements of the Biosecurity Act 2019 (Tasmania)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Council may investigate complaints where beekeeping activities create unreasonable nuisance, safety concerns or public health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hive registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Tasmanian law, all beehives must be registered with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration helps support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disease monitoring and biosecurity management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traceability during pest or disease outbreaks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education and support for beekeepers across Tasmania<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Beekeepers are encouraged to maintain good hive management practices and stay informed about biosecurity obligations and emerging risks affecting bee populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phone: 03 6165 3777<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beekeeping knowledge and experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To promote safe and responsible beekeeping, hive owners should have an appropriate level of knowledge and competency before establishing hives in urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council encourages beekeepers to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Join a recognised beekeeping association or club<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undertake introductory beekeeping training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek guidance from experienced beekeepers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly inspect and maintain hives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand seasonal bee behaviour and swarm management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsible management helps reduce conflict and supports positive outcomes for both beekeepers and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neighbouring properties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good communication with neighbours is an important part of successful urban beekeeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before establishing hives, residents are encouraged to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss their plans with neighbouring property owners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider the location of outdoor living areas, pools and pathways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respond respectfully to any concerns raised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take reasonable steps to minimise impacts on surrounding properties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most concerns can be resolved through open communication and proactive hive management. Where issues cannot be resolved directly, residents may contact Council for advice or assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Talk to your neighbours first.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bees can cause concern even if they&#8217;re not actually dangerous, so have a conversation before you set anything up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registration is compulsory. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Tasmania&#8217;s <em>Biosecurity Act 2019<\/em> and <em>Biosecurity Regulations 2022<\/em> (in effect since November 2022), all beekeepers \u2014 commercial and recreational \u2014 must be registered. No exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to register.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Tasmania uses an online system called <strong>BeeTAS<\/strong>, available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nre.tas.gov.au\/beekeeper-registration\">nre.tas.gov.au\/beekeeper-registration<\/a>. Through BeeTAS you can register or renew, update your apiary site details, log hive inspections, purchases, disposals and movements, and upload training certificates and lab results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow the Code of Practice.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tasmanian Beekeepers Association has an Urban Beekeeping Code of Practice designed to make sure your bees don&#8217;t negatively affect people, animals, or local flora and fauna.
