Lost or stray animals

If you find a lost or stray dog, attempt to secure the dog in a yard or on a lead (if it is safe to do so).  Do not attempt to secure or remove a dog if it appears to be aggressive. To contact us about the lost or stray dog, please phone us:

  • Business hours – Animal Management on (03) 6216 6800
  • After hours (aggressive dogs only) – (03) 6216 6600

View more information about our after-hours service.
A Council animal management officer will collect the dog and will make every attempt to reunite it with its owner by checking its registration tag, microchip and the lost dog database.

Council will only destroy a dog in exceptional circumstances and after every possible attempt has been made to locate its owner or re-home it.
For more information on lost or stray dogs, please see our lost dogs page.
