Collection of personal information

Glenorchy City Council holds information that you have given to us about yourself when you have used our services. For example, the information could be from when you applied for a building permit, registered your dog or placed your name on the General Manager’s electoral roll. Sometimes, another organisation may lawfully give us your personal information, such as property title details.

Our staff are only provided with or have access to the information that is necessary for them to carry out their functions within the Council. Otherwise, your personal information will only be disclosed with your consent, or if it is required by, or authorised by, law.

If you make a general enquiry, you can choose to be anonymous, however some services may be inaccessible if you don’t provide certain personal details.

Sensitive information and security

We will generally only collect sensitive Information with your consent, if it is necessary, or if the collection of that information is required or permitted by law. This includes things like health or financial information, criminal records, racial origin or sexual preferences.

We endeavour to take all reasonable steps to keep your information secure. We have secure storage (electronic and hardware) and train our staff to respect your privacy and keep your information confidential.

Changing your information

You can access your personal information at any time, and amend the details. If you can’t change or delete details, we will explain why. You must submit changes in writing and address them to Council's Privacy Officer.

If you have been denied access to your personal information you may apply to the Principal Officer (the Mayor) for a review of that decision.
