Named in honour of Ian "Jesse" James, a former Glenorchy City Council employee and passionate local sporting identity, the Ian "Jesse" James Memorial Ground — is located on Eady Street in Glenorchy.
Features
The ground was established primarily as a cricket oval in the 1930s, and has since been home to the Glenorchy Rugby Union Club (formed in 1965) and more recently to the Wellington Cricket Club, the Glenorchy Knights Football Club, and the Glenorchy District Football Club. In 2016, the Council invested $240,000 in new floodlighting and committed a further $200,000 to additional ground improvements.
History
Mr James served as a council employee for 43 years and was a high-achieving sportsman and administrator, with ties to both the Glenorchy Cricket Club and the Glenorchy Football Club. Mayor Kristie Johnston noted that he had “impacted the lives of thousands of people in Glenorchy.”
