Once Tolosa Dam, Tolosa Parklands is new one of Tasmania's largest regional parks.

Spanning over 25 hectares at the foothills of kunanyi/Mount Wellington.

Following a $6.2 million redevelopment completed in 2024, the former dam site has been transformed into a beautiful, family-friendly open space — marking an exciting new chapter for this much-loved destination.

How It Came Together

The former Tolosa Dam occupied a large portion of the park but had been removed from Glenorchy’s water network in 2018, when TasWater constructed two above-ground reservoirs to better service the community. Working in partnership with Glenorchy City Council, TasWater undertook the partial demolition of the 20-metre-high dam wall and extensive earthworks to create an open parkland with water features, landscaping, and grassed areas. TasWater contributed $3.2 million to the redevelopment, with Council funding a walking trail network throughout the site.

The redevelopment was shaped by extensive community consultation, with residents calling for shade areas, improved access, children’s play facilities, dog walking areas, family-friendly spaces, skate facilities, water features, and cycling, MTB, and BMX infrastructure. This feedback informed the Tolosa Park Masterplan, which guided the project and continues to shape future plans for the area.

What’s There Now

The transformed parklands feature open grassed areas, water features, landscaping, and a walking trail network — with minor trail and landscaping works continuing in some areas. The park remains one of southern Tasmania’s most popular passive recreation destinations and serves as the northern suburbs’ gateway to Wellington Park and the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park.

What’s Next

Stage B of the Tolosa Park Masterplan is now in planning, with Council seeking funding for a range of improvements including a pump track, accessible walking trails, community facilities, a multi-use games arena, cycling infrastructure upgrades, environmental enhancements, and a Wellington Park visitor centre. See the 톨로사 공원 page for full details.

In 2025, the two Tolosa Reservoir tanks are also received an artistic makeover, with a mural design by local artist Harrison Bowe and Vibrance Projects that celebrates Tasmania’s natural landscape and the journey water takes through it.
