Glenorchy has plenty of spots to walk and exercise your dog

These spaces provide opportunities for dogs and their owners to enjoy outdoor recreation while helping balance the needs of other park users, nearby residents and the natural environment.

Council encourages responsible dog ownership to help ensure dog exercise areas remain safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

The council provides two maps to help you find areas near you, showing where dogs are allowed off-lead, on-lead only, and not permitted.

Whatever area you visit, always keep your dog under effective control.

Off-leash areas

Dogs are permitted off-leash only within designated dog exercise areas approved by Council.

These areas provide spaces where dogs can run freely under supervision and enjoy social interaction and exercise.

Current off-leash areas are shown on the Discover Glenorchy mapping tool.

The mapping tool can help residents locate nearby:

  • Off-leash dog exercise areas
  • Dog-friendly parks and reserves
  • Walking paths and recreation spaces
  • Parks with bins and waste bag facilities

Benefits of dog exercise areas

Dog exercise areas support healthy and active lifestyles for both pets and owners.

Regular exercise and socialisation can help:

  • Improve dog behaviour and wellbeing
  • Encourage responsible pet ownership
  • Support physical activity and outdoor recreation
  • Strengthen community connection and social interaction

These areas also provide safe spaces for dogs to exercise away from roads and high-traffic public areas.

Rules in off-leash areas

Even within designated off-leash areas, dog owners remain responsible for the behaviour and control of their dogs at all times.

When using off-leash areas, you must:

  • Stay with your dog and supervise it at all times
  • Keep your dog under effective control
  • Ensure your dog responds to commands
  • Clean up after your dog immediately
  • Dispose of waste responsibly using bins provided
  • Prevent your dog from harassing people, wildlife or other dogs
  • Remove your dog if it becomes aggressive or unsafe

Waste bags and bins are provided at many dog exercise areas to support responsible use of public spaces.

Dogs on leads

Outside designated off-leash areas, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times when on public land.

This includes:

  • Parks and reserves
  • Footpaths and shared-use paths
  • Streets and public spaces
  • Foreshore and recreation areas

Keeping dogs on leads helps protect public safety, wildlife and the comfort of other park users.

Dogs in playgrounds

Dogs are not permitted within Council-operated playground areas.

This helps maintain safe, clean and family-friendly environments for children and playground users.

Owners should observe all signage relating to dog access restrictions in parks and public spaces.

Responsible dog ownership

Council encourages all dog owners to help create a safe and respectful community by:

  • Registering dogs with Council
  • Keeping dogs under effective control
  • Preventing nuisance behaviour
  • Picking up dog waste
  • Respecting other park users and wildlife
  • Following signage and local animal management rules

Responsible ownership helps ensure public spaces remain enjoyable and accessible for everyone.

Protecting wildlife and the environment

Some parks, reserves and foreshore areas contain sensitive wildlife habitat and environmentally significant areas.

Dog owners should take extra care near:

  • Bushland reserves
  • Wetlands and waterways
  • Bird nesting areas
  • Shared walking and cycling paths

Keeping dogs under control helps protect wildlife and minimise environmental impacts.
