If you have or are installing a swimming pool or spa at your home, safety barriers are required by law.

Safety barrier requirements

All swimming pools and spas must be surrounded by a safety barrier that prevents young children from accessing the water without supervision. This is required under the Building Act 2016 (Tasmania).

The barrier must:

  • Be at least 1.2 metres high
  • Have no footholds or handholds that would allow a child to climb it
  • Have a self-closing, self-latching gate

Building permits

Installing an in-ground or above-ground swimming pool generally requires a building permit. Contact Council’s building team before starting work.

Temporary pools

Small inflatable or portable pools (such as paddling pools) may be exempt from barrier requirements. Contact us to confirm.

Pool inspections

Council may conduct inspections to ensure pools meet safety requirements. If your pool does not comply, you will be required to bring it up to standard.
