Glenorchy City Council is governed by elected members who represent the interests of the community. Councillors and Aldermen are elected by residents of the Glenorchy municipality every four years. Council is made up of ten elected members, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Elected members may be referred to as Councillors or Aldermen. All elected members represent the entire municipality — Glenorchy does not have wards or divisions.

The Mayor
The Mayor is elected by the community and serves as the civic leader of the municipality. The Mayor chairs Council meetings, represents Council at official functions and provides leadership on community matters.
How elections work
Local government elections in Tasmania are conducted every four years by postal ballot. Voting is compulsory for eligible voters enrolled within the municipality.
The next ordinary Council election is scheduled for October 2026.
