Can I attend a Council meeting?

Yes. Ordinary Council meetings are open to the public and community members are welcome to attend as observers. You do not need to register or receive an invitation to attend.

Where are meetings held?

Council meetings are generally held in the Council Chambers at:

  • 374 Main Road, Glenorchy TAS 7010

Meeting details are published on Council’s website prior to each meeting.

Can I watch online?

Yes. Meetings are livestreamed on our Facebook Page and YouTube channel. Recordings are available after the meeting.

How do I ask a question at a meeting?

Public questions must be submitted in writing before the meeting deadline specified in the agenda. Questions can be submitted by emailing gccmail@gcc.tas.gov.au

Please include:

  • Your full name
  • Your address
  • Your question

Questions are read aloud during the meeting and responded to by an Elected Member or Council officer where appropriate.

Are Council decisions final?

Council decisions are made by a majority vote of the Elected Members. Some decisions may be subject to review or appeal processes, including appeals to the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal (RMPAT), where applicable under legislation.

How do I find out what will be discussed?

Meeting Agendas are published on Council’s website before each meeting. Community members can also subscribe to receive notifications when agendas and meeting documents are published.

What happens at a meeting?

Council meetings follow a formal agenda and meeting procedure. During a meeting:

  • The Mayor opens and chairs the meeting
  • Agenda items are presented and discussed
  • Aldermen debate and vote on motions and recommendations
  • Public questions and petitions may be addressed where applicable

Members of the public may observe proceedings but cannot participate directly unless involved in an approved formal process.

Who chairs the meeting?

The Mayor chairs Council meetings. The Deputy Mayor chairs if the Mayor is absent.

How long do meetings last?

Meeting duration varies depending on the number and complexity of agenda items. Most ordinary Council meetings run for approximately two to four hours.

Can I speak at a meeting?

Members of the public are generally not permitted to speak during Council meetings unless formally invited as part of an approved process, such as a deputation or presentation. Community members can participate through public questions, petitions and other engagement opportunities provided by Council.
