Glenorchy City Council elections are held every four years.

Voting is compulsory for all enrolled residents of the Glenorchy municipality.

How elections work

Tasmanian local government elections are conducted by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) using a postal ballot. You do not need to attend a polling booth.

The voting system used is the Hare-Clark proportional representation system (similar to state elections). This system ensures fair representation across the community.

Who can vote?

You can vote if you are:

  • Enrolled to vote in the Glenorchy municipality
  • An Australian citizen aged 18 or over

Voting is compulsory. If you are enrolled and do not vote, you may receive a fine.

Who can stand for election?

You can stand as a candidate if you are:

  • An Australian citizen aged 18 or over
  • Enrolled to vote in the Glenorchy municipality
  • Not disqualified under the Local Government Act 1993

Next election

The next ordinary Council election is scheduled for October 2026.
