Grow It Local
The group is also connected to Grow It Local, a community initiative that encourages people to grow fresh food, reduce waste and learn practical gardening skills. Through Grow It Local, members can access expert advice, workshops, online resources and a supportive network of local growers.

On Wednesday 20 May, we celebrated National Volunteer Week with another fantastic Garden Group session, welcoming a total of 28 volunteers to the garden for a productive and community-focused morning, finished off with a BBQ lunch together.
Throughout the session, volunteers planted a wide range of winter vegetables across the raised beds including broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, leek, spinach, onions, cabbage and radish, helping prepare the garden for the cooler months ahead.
The group also completed minor weeding throughout the space, with one volunteer tackling weeds in the gravel area below the planter boxes. Volunteers tended to the bird netting, carried out repairs to the drip line irrigation system by patching leaks, and sorted through donated clothing left in the share shed to prepare items for donation to the local op shop.
Creative activities including Kinder card making and CD painting also provided a fun and engaging opportunity for participants to connect and contribute in different ways throughout the morning.
A special thank you to Mayor Sue Hickey and Alderman Tim Marks for attending and contributing to the day’s celebrations and activities.
A huge thank you to all volunteers and staff who contributed their time, energy and enthusiasm to the session. The day was a wonderful reflection of community connection, volunteer spirit and action in the garden space.

On Wednesday 13 May, we had another productive Garden Group session with volunteers hard at work preparing the space for upcoming winter planting activities.
Together, the group prepped 9 veggie beds by breaking up compacted soil, adding soil conditioner where needed, and incorporating manure ready for planting.
Volunteers also manually mowed almost the entire garden, excluding some of the longer grassed sections, and completed some light pruning of the trees near the front gate.
One of our regular volunteers, Mark, took the initiative to repair the share shed and stabilise a tap support pole, helping improve the functionality and safety of the garden space.
The group also worked together to develop a seedling wish list ahead of next week’s volunteer planting day as part of National Volunteer Week.
In the coming weeks, our team will work closely with the group to establish a group agreement and discuss shared ideas for the garden moving into Winter for Spring, such as a quarterly newsletter and wish list for workshops and other initiatives at the garden.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time and energy during the session!
On Wednesday 6 May, Garden Group was led by Ash and ABC! We had 7 wonderful volunteers join us at the garden this week. Together, the group finished weeding and mulching the herb garden and created a mesh cover to help protect it from some very determined possums!
Work also began on weeding and mulching the raspberry beds, and a new bed of carrot seeds was planted out. Volunteers also completed the pruning of the fruit trees.
The group continued investigating a leak in the irrigation system within the fruit tree area, which volunteers shared has been an ongoing issue for several years and has unfortunately contributed to the loss of some well-established fruit trees.
A big thank you to a community member who kindly provided a delicious warm lunch of vegetable stir-fry and fresh bread for everyone to enjoy.
Next Wednesday 13 May, we will be preparing the garden beds for the winter crops that will be planting out on Wednesday 20 May, during National Volunteer Week!
