Information about your responsibilities for trees on your property and the nature strip in front of your home.
Nature Strips
Current rate revenues do not allow Council to maintain nature strips and Council recognises the benefits to householders of planting their nature strips with low maintenance or low water requiring plants. Council recognises the value of nature strips in enhancing properties and streetscapes and encourages owners and residents to take pride in maintaining them.
Council has a Nature Strip Policy , that is available in the Documents and Publications Library.
Trees
Street trees make our streets look more attractive and welcoming. As they grow, they help create a greener, more vibrant neighbourhood and strengthen the character of the area.
Trees add colour, shade and visual interest to streets, making them more pleasant places to live, work and visit. They also help cool the city by reducing heat from roads, footpaths and other hard surfaces, making the area more comfortable during hot weather.
Street trees can help manage stormwater when used alongside features such as rain gardens and drainage swales. They also support local wildlife by providing food and habitat, which helps increase biodiversity.
Glenorchy City Council is committed to creating a more sustainable and liveable city. Part of this commitment is helping the community understand the many benefits that street trees provide, including their positive impact on health and wellbeing.
Street trees can also improve road safety by naturally slowing traffic and helping people find their way around the city. They can be used to highlight important routes and entrances into Glenorchy.
Council is committed to protecting and maintaining street trees. Decisions about street trees will be made fairly and consistently, while taking into account the needs of pedestrians and essential services. By managing trees well, Council aims to ensure they continue to provide value and benefits to the community for years to come.
Council has a Tree Management Policy that is available in the Documents and Publications Library.
