Glenorchy City Council provides a range of additional waste and recycling services to support households, landlords and residential developments with different waste management needs.
These services are available in addition to the standard kerbside waste collection service and may be subject to additional fees and conditions.
Standard kerbside waste service
Most residential properties in Glenorchy receive a standard three-bin kerbside collection service, which typically includes:
- General waste bin
- Recycling bin
- Food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bin, where applicable
Collection schedules and service availability may vary depending on the property type and location.
Larger bins
Households that regularly generate more waste than can fit in a standard bin may be eligible to apply for a larger capacity service.
Available options may include:
- Upgrading a standard 140-litre general waste bin to a 240-litre bin
- Requesting additional recycling bins
- Additional or replacement bins for approved circumstances
Additional annual service charges may apply for upgraded or extra bins.
Larger bin services may be suitable for:
- Larger households
- Families with children
- Residents with medical or care-related waste needs
- Shared households
- Properties with limited waste storage space
Council may assess requests to determine eligibility and service suitability.
More frequent collection
Residents requiring more frequent general waste collection may be able to arrange a weekly collection service for an additional charge.
This service is managed directly by Veolia.

Weekly collection services may assist households that:
- Produce higher volumes of waste
- Have medical or hygiene-related waste needs
- Require additional waste management support
Fees and service conditions are determined by the waste contractor.
Landlords and rental properties
Property owners and landlords are responsible for ensuring appropriate waste and recycling services are available for their rental properties.
This includes:
- Ensuring bins are present at the property
- Arranging waste services for newly constructed or newly tenanted properties
- Replacing missing or damaged bins where required
- Providing tenants with access to appropriate waste disposal services
If you are establishing a new rental property or require changes to existing services, contact Council to discuss available options.
Multi-unit developments
Waste services for apartment buildings, units and townhouse developments are managed differently to standard residential properties.
Multi-unit developments must comply with Council’s Waste Services Standards for Multiple Dwelling Units, which help ensure:
- Adequate bin storage space
- Safe and accessible collection arrangements
- Sufficient waste and recycling capacity
- Appropriate vehicle access for collection trucks
- Minimised impacts on neighbouring properties and public areas
Waste management requirements may form part of the development approval process for new residential developments.
Council may require:
- Waste management plans
- Shared bin arrangements
- Dedicated collection areas
- Private collection services in some circumstances
Developers, strata managers and property owners are encouraged to contact Council early in the planning process to discuss waste servicing requirements.
Additional waste services may be subject to:
- Annual fees and charges
- Bin availability
- Property access limitations
- Occupational health and safety requirements
- Collection vehicle access constraints
Council and its waste contractor may inspect properties or collection arrangements where required to determine suitable service levels.
