Glenorchy City Council operates within a legislative framework established by the Tasmanian Government.
Council also develops and administers local by-laws that apply within the Glenorchy municipality.
State legislation
Council’s responsibilities and functions are governed primarily by Tasmanian legislation, including:
- Public Health Act 1997
- Local Government Act 1993 (Tasmania)
- Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993
- Building Act 2016
- Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994

Council by-laws
By-laws are local laws made by Council that apply within the Glenorchy municipality. They help regulate activities and protect community safety, amenity and public spaces.

Council by-laws must be approved by Council and the responsible Minister and are published in the Tasmanian Government Gazette.
