We want your bin collection to run smoothly. Here is what to do if something goes wrong.

Glenorchy City Council works with its waste collection contractors to provide reliable kerbside waste, recycling and FOGO services across the municipality.

If there is a problem with your bin collection or waste service, Council can help investigate the issue and arrange repairs, replacements or follow-up collections where required.

Missed collection

If your bin was not collected on your scheduled collection day, there are a few things to check before reporting the issue.

Please ensure:

  • Your bin was placed out before 6:00 am on collection day
  • The correct bin was presented for collection
  • The bin lid was fully closed
  • The bin was not overloaded or excessively heavy
  • There were no vehicles, trees or other obstacles blocking access
  • The bin was positioned correctly at the kerb or collection point

In some cases, bins may not be collected due to:

  • Unsafe access conditions
  • Contaminated recycling or FOGO bins
  • Severe weather or emergency conditions
  • Road closures or traffic issues
  • Mechanical issues affecting collection vehicles

If you believe your collection was missed in error, please contact Council within 24 hours of your scheduled collection day.

Council will investigate the matter with the collection contractor and, where appropriate, arrange a return collection.

If your bin was not collected on your scheduled day:

  1. If you are sure it was missed, report it to Council within 24 hours
  2. Ensure that it did not contain hazardous items which cannot be collected.

To view a list of items that you can and cannot place in your bin read our Waste And Recycling Services Guide (PDF).

Check the lid of your bin for a sticker which will tell you the reason it was not collected and then contact us. We will notify our waste services contractor to make sure that your missed bins are collected.

Did you know?

Sometimes if your bin is really full, items may become compacted so they don’t fall out when the bin is lifted into the truck. Make sure the contents of the bin are loose to get the best results out of your service.

Damaged or lost bin

Bins can occasionally become damaged through normal use or during collection operations.

Examples of damage may include:

  • Cracked or broken lids
  • Missing or damaged wheels
  • Broken hinges or handles
  • Cracked bin bodies

If your bin has been damaged, contact Council to request an inspection, repair or replacement.

Council may arrange:

  • Repair of the existing bin
  • Replacement parts
  • Full bin replacement where required

If your bin has been damaged (cracked lid, broken wheels etc.) or lost, contact us and we will arrange a repair or replacement.

Stolen bin

If your bin has been stolen or gone missing, contact Council as soon as possible.

Council may:

  • Confirm whether the bin was removed accidentally during collection
  • Arrange a replacement bin
  • Apply a replacement fee where applicable

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Clearly mark bins with their street number
  • Remove bins from the kerb promptly after collection
  • Store bins securely where possible

Wrong bin collected

If the wrong bin was emptied or collected by mistake, contact Council as soon as possible so the issue can be investigated.

Examples may include:

  • Recycling collected instead of general waste
  • FOGO collected on the wrong week
  • A neighbour’s bin being collected accidentally

Providing details about the incident, including photos where possible, can assist with investigations.

New bin (new property)

If your property does not currently have waste, recycling or FOGO bins, Council can arrange a kerbside waste service.

This may apply to:

  • Newly constructed homes
  • Newly occupied properties
  • New rental properties
  • Subdivisions or newly created lots

Council will confirm service eligibility and arrange delivery of the required bins. If your property does not have bins, contact us to arrange a service.

Request a different size bin

Residents may be able to request a larger or smaller bin depending on household needs and service availability.

Options may include:

  • Upgrading to a larger general waste bin
  • Requesting additional recycling capacity
  • Changing bin sizes for approved circumstances

Additional fees may apply for upgraded or extra services.

Larger bins may be suitable for:

  • Larger households
  • Shared accommodation
  • Medical or care-related waste needs
  • Properties generating higher waste volumes

Contact us to discuss options for upgrading or downgrading your bin size. Check Additional Waste Collection for more information.

Tips to avoid collection issues

To help ensure your bins are collected correctly:

  • Place bins out the night before or before 6:00 am on collection day
  • Leave enough space between bins and parked cars
  • Keep bin lids closed
  • Avoid overfilling bins
  • Follow correct recycling and FOGO sorting guidelines
  • Bring bins in promptly after collection
