Graffiti Management

Council is committed to keeping Glenorchy clean, welcoming and safe through proactive graffiti management.

Graffiti that is offensive, vandalising or impacts public amenity is prioritised for removal, with Council working to respond as quickly as possible once it is reported.

We focus on early removal to deter repeat tagging, protect community assets and maintain pride in our public spaces.

Council also supports positive alternatives such as approved murals and public art, which celebrate creativity while reducing unwanted graffiti.

Residents can help by reporting graffiti promptly, allowing Council to respond efficiently and keep our neighbourhoods looking their best.

Free Graffiti Removal Kits

Glenorchy City Council is strengthening efforts to keep local streets clean and welcoming by offering free graffiti removal kits to residents and businesses across the municipality.

The initiative empowers the community to act quickly when graffiti appears, helping reduce its impact and discourage repeat tagging.

Free kits are available to locals and business owners willing to remove graffiti from their property.

Council officers can also attend businesses to provide hands-on support, including cleaning affected surfaces and, where needed, painting over damaged areas.

This service is free.

Private property owners, occupiers and managers are responsible for removing graffiti on their property. However, Council may remove graffiti on private and public land in certain circumstances, including where:

  • It is located up to one metre down a driveway or laneway.
  • It was applied from public land, such as a road reserve or public property boundary.
  • It is highly visible from an arterial road or within the CBD.
  • It is racist, obscene or offensive and removal is necessary to prevent public concern or anger.
  • The property owner does not have the resources to remove it.
  • There is a coordinated program to improve the amenity of an area.

Council will not remove graffiti from sandstone or heritage-listed buildings, or from areas higher than 2.4 metres above ground level.

In these cases, a specialist should be engaged. Council may still assist private property owners with advice and, where appropriate, provide free kits for small amounts of graffiti to support prompt clean-up.

Residents and businesses can request a free graffiti removal kit by emailing gccmail@gcc.tas.gov.au or calling 03 6216 6800.

Kits are available through Council’s Customer Service Team while stocks last.

By working together, Council and the community can help maintain safe, attractive neighbourhoods and ensure Glenorchy remains a place everyone can be proud of.
