The program

Council may be granted permission from Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) to conduct baiting programs. This involves pre-feeding rabbits with carrots, followed by carrots containing pindone poison — an anti-coagulant similar to compounds used in common rat poisons. Warning signs will be in place and residents will be notified if Council conducts a baiting program.

Is it safe for people?

Baits pose no risk to people unless interfered with. Please do not touch or disturb baits used in a rabbit baiting program.

What about dogs?

If you are walking a dog near an identified rabbit baiting area, please keep it on a lead. Council advises that a dog would need to consume a large number of poisoned rabbits to be at risk of secondary poisoning, but caution is still strongly advised.

Signs of pindone poisoning

Signs include excess salivation, vomiting, blood in faeces and general weakness. If a person ingests poison, seek medical assistance immediately. If a domestic animal shows symptoms, contact a vet.

Private properties

Council is not authorised to conduct control programs on private land. Residents experiencing rabbit problems are encouraged to contact NRE directly for advice.
