The Glenorchy Planning Authority makes decisions on land use and planning matters.

Including whether to approve development applications. Unlike some councils, planning decisions in Glenorchy are handled by the Planning Authority rather than at full Council meetings. Some straightforward applications can be decided by planning officers under delegated authority — see those decisions here.

Who sits on the Planning Authority?

  • Mayor Sue Hickey (Chair)
  • Deputy Mayor Russell Yaxley
  • Alderman Steven King
  • Alderman Josh Cockshutt
  • Alderman Tim Marks

Meetings

The Planning Authority meets monthly on Mondays at 3:30pm. View all upcoming meeting dates here.

All meetings are streamed live on Council’s Facebook page, YouTube channel and website — no account required to watch. If a meeting is cancelled, this will be advertised on Facebook and in the Mercury the Saturday prior.

If attending in person, please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Applicants and those who have lodged formal representations will be invited to address the meeting and given first preference for in-person seats.

What does the GPA do?

The GPA considers planning applications and related matters that require a decision by elected members.

This may include:

  • Planning applications referred to the GPA for determination
  • Planning scheme amendments
  • Development matters referred by Council
  • Other planning and land use matters requiring formal consideration

Most planning applications are determined by Council planning officers under delegated authority and do not require referral to the GPA.

GPA Meetings

The GPA meets as required, generally on the same evening as, or immediately prior to, an ordinary Council meeting.

Meetings are open to the public and community members are welcome to attend as observers.

Agendas and minutes for GPA meetings are published on Council’s website alongside ordinary Council meeting documents.

Representations and appeals

Community members who have submitted a representation on a planning application may be invited to speak at a GPA meeting as part of the planning assessment process.

Further information about representations, hearings and appeal rights is available on the Planning Representation and Appeal Process page.

Minutes and agendas

Minutes and agendas are available on the Meetings page.
