Shopping trolleys left outside shopping precincts are a hazard for pedestrians and motorists, and often end up in local waterways.
Council actively collects and impounds them under the Public Places and Infrastructure By-Law and Traffic Act 1925.

Shoppers
If you use a trolley, it’s your responsibility to keep it within the shopping precinct.
Retailers
Shop owners must take reasonable steps to keep trolleys within their precincts. Any trolley removed must be retrieved within 24 hours to avoid Council collection.
Council’s role
Trolleys found on Council land are impounded at the Jackson Street Waste Management Centre for up to 30 days. After that, uncollected trolleys are disposed of. A release fee applies to reclaim an impounded trolley.
To claim a seized trolley, call Council on (03) 6216 6800.
