Glenorchy City Council has a long-term strategy for managing waste sustainably and reducing the amount of material sent to landfill.

Glenorchy City Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy provides direction on delivering effective and sustainable waste management in the city over the next five years.

We believe Glenorchy can be a leader in resource recovery. A clear strategy that is both aspirational and realistic will help us to continue to demonstrate leadership in waste reduction and management – provided it remains up-to-date and focused on the right activities.

The strategy is based on the principles of a circular economy and waste minimisation — to prioritise reduction, reuse, repair, remanufacture and recycling of materials, avoiding disposal to landfill wherever possible.
The strategy aligns with Australian Government, Tasmanian Government and regional planning while focusing on areas that are within Council’s control, including delivery of services and infrastructure, educating and advocating for change, and governing where necessary.
