Glenorchy City Council sets lighting standards for streets, parks, and reserves. TasNetworks handles installation and maintenance on Council's behalf.

Reporting a faulty light

Residents and road users are encouraged to report street lights that are not operating correctly so repairs can be arranged as quickly as possible.

Street light faults may include:

  • Lights not working
  • Flickering or intermittent operation
  • Lights remaining on during daylight hours
  • Damaged poles, fittings or light covers
  • Exposed wiring or electrical safety concerns
  • Leaning or unstable light poles

Prompt reporting assists Council and TasNetworks in maintaining safe lighting conditions throughout the municipality.

Contact TasNetworks directly on 132 004 or via their online form. When reporting, have ready:

  • The 6-digit pole number
  • The street name and nearest house number

Faults can include lights that are out, dimming, damaged, or staying on during the day.

Response time

Council aims to investigate reported street light faults within approximately five business days where possible.

Repair timeframes may vary depending on factors including:

  • The nature and severity of the fault
  • Electrical safety requirements
  • Availability of replacement parts or equipment
  • Weather conditions
  • Whether the asset is maintained by Council or TasNetworks

Some repairs may require specialist electrical contractors or coordination with external service providers.

Where faults present an immediate public safety risk, urgent action may be prioritised.

TasNetworks

Some street lights within Glenorchy are owned or maintained directly by TasNetworks.

If Council is unable to identify or resolve a reported fault, the issue may be referred to TasNetworks for further investigation and repair.

TasNetworks may manage faults relating to:

  • Electrical supply infrastructure
  • Power outages affecting street lighting
  • Network-connected street light faults
  • Damaged poles or electrical equipment

Council works collaboratively with TasNetworks to help ensure faults are addressed appropriately and public lighting remains operational.

Public Safety and Street Lighting

Street lighting assists in improving:

  • Visibility for motorists and pedestrians
  • Safety at intersections and crossings
  • Community security and public amenity
  • Access to public facilities and pathways
  • Night-time navigation and accessibility

Residents are encouraged to report lighting faults promptly to help maintain safe conditions within the community.

Lighting levels

Busier areas get brighter lighting. Council’s Street Lighting Policy (PDF) has full details. For questions about lighting in a specific area, contact Council directly.
