Glenorchy City Council acknowledges the palawa people as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lutruwita/Tasmania, including the land on which we work and live.
Council recognises that Aboriginal culture is one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world and values the important contribution Aboriginal people make to the Glenorchy community.
Our commitment
Council is committed to building respectful relationships with the Aboriginal community and supporting meaningful reconciliation through collaboration, learning and action.
This commitment includes:
- Recognising and celebrating Aboriginal culture, heritage and history
- Supporting opportunities for Aboriginal voices and leadership in the community
- Promoting cultural awareness and understanding across Council and the wider community
- Working in partnership with Aboriginal organisations and community members
- Creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for Aboriginal people
- Supporting reconciliation through practical actions and ongoing engagement
Council aims to ensure Aboriginal perspectives are considered in community planning, programs, events and initiatives wherever possible.
Programs and initiatives
Council supports a range of programs and activities that recognise and celebrate Aboriginal culture and strengthen community connections.
These may include:
Cultural events and celebrations
Council supports and participates in events that celebrate Aboriginal culture, history and achievement, including activities during:
- National Reconciliation Week
- NAIDOC Week
- Community cultural celebrations and events
These events provide opportunities for learning, reflection and community connection.
Education and awareness programs
Council encourages greater understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary experiences through:
- Community education activities
- Cultural awareness initiatives
- School and community engagement opportunities
- Acknowledgement of Country and cultural recognition practices
Support for Aboriginal-led initiatives
Council values Aboriginal leadership and supports Aboriginal-led community programs and initiatives where possible. This may include partnerships, community projects and activities that strengthen cultural identity, wellbeing and participation.
Reconciliation Action Plan activities
Council undertakes actions and initiatives identified through its Reconciliation Action Plan to support ongoing reconciliation outcomes within the organisation and across the community.
Acknowledgement of Country
Glenorchy City Council acknowledges the Muwinina people as the traditional owners of this Land.
We recognise all Tasmanian Aboriginal people as the original owners and continuing custodians of the land and waters of this island, Lutruwita.
We pay our respect to Aboriginal Elders, past and present.
We commit to working for a City that welcomes and respects all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
