The Glenorchy City Council Treasure Trail is your guide to exploring the city's world of second-hand

Discover hidden gems, save money, and support a more sustainable, circular economy.

Why Shop Second-Hand?

Shopping second-hand is good for your wallet, your community, and the planet. It keeps items out of landfill, reduces the demand for new manufacturing, and supports local charities. You’ll also find unique, high-quality items at a fraction of their original cost — and develop a style that’s entirely your own.

Tips for Donating

Op shops can only sell what’s in good condition, so before donating, ask yourself: “Would I give this to a friend?” If the answer is yes, here’s how to donate well:

  • Condition — Donate only clean, undamaged, wearable items. Avoid anything stained, torn, mouldy, or heavily worn.
  • Wash first — Freshly laundered items are easier to process and help protect staff and volunteers.
  • Pack thoughtfully — Fold items neatly and pack in sturdy bags or boxes. Group similar items together where possible.
  • Think seasonally — Donate items suited to the current or upcoming season so they can be displayed and sold quickly.
  • Check before you go — Some shops pause donations when full. A quick call ahead can save a wasted trip.
  • Don’t leave items after hours — Donations left outside can be damaged or stolen. Always drop off during opening hours.
  • Recycle what can’t be donated — Items not suitable for resale can often be dropped at textile recycling points rather than going to landfill.
