Around 48% of Tasmanians need stronger reading, writing and maths skills to manage everyday tasks.

Glenorchy City Council is proud to be a 26ten Literacy Community, supporting efforts to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for people of all ages across Glenorchy.

Council recognises that literacy and numeracy skills are essential for education, employment, everyday life and community participation. Through the 26ten initiative, Council works with community organisations, education providers and government agencies to help residents build skills and confidence.

What is 26ten?

26ten Tasmania is a Tasmanian Government initiative focused on improving adult literacy and numeracy across the state.

The name “26ten” represents the 26 letters of the alphabet and the 10 digits used in numeracy. The program supports individuals, workplaces, organisations and communities to improve literacy skills and create environments where people feel supported to learn.

Glenorchy is one of the Tasmanian communities that has committed to supporting literacy improvement through the 26ten program.

Why literacy matters

Literacy and numeracy skills play an important role in everyday life. Reading, writing, speaking and understanding information help people participate more confidently in work, education and the community.

Strong literacy skills can help people:

  • Access education and training opportunities
  • Apply for jobs and participate in the workforce
  • Understand health, financial and legal information
  • Support children’s learning and development
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Participate more fully in community life

Council recognises that literacy challenges can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and that supportive, inclusive learning opportunities can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Through the 26ten initiative, Council supports and promotes a range of literacy and learning activities across the community.
