Hear, Hear, for volunteers!

Nominations are open for the 2022 Glenorchy Volunteer Awards. This year, Glenorchy Council will trial a simplified nomination process to allow organisations to acknowledge and celebrate the wide spectrum of volunteers in the community.

Established in 1994, the Awards recognise the efforts of volunteers within the community, celebrating the achievements of individuals who give up their time to give back to the community. Glenorchy is fortunate to have a rich and diverse culture of volunteering, which includes environmental groups, disability support, crisis and emergency support services, sporting clubs, meal delivery, aged care, youth groups and many more.

Glenorchy Mayor, Bec Thomas will be leading the Volunteer Award ceremony later this year and she understands the impact of volunteering in the Glenorchy community,

“Volunteers are an essential part of our community, many of the programs and services available to the people of Glenorchy wouldn’t happen without volunteers. Through the peak of COVID-19, while many people were required to stay home, our Glenorchy volunteers continued to safely deliver essential services like organising food packages to assist those in need.  Volunteers offer care, comfort and more to support the well-being of those in our community and it is important we recognise their contribution” She said.

Last year, Council received 72 nominations with volunteers clocking up an impressive number of service hours ranging from 500+ hours through to 10,000+ hours. Nominations were also received for a Special Contribution category, awarded to those volunteers who have given considerable hours and many years of service to their organisation.

This year, the 2022 Glenorchy Volunteer Awards allow nominating organisations to select up to five volunteers across any area of volunteering who have displayed an outstanding commitment to their work for the past year. The trial format will give newer organisations (and new volunteers) an opportunity to be recognised at the awards with the removal of a minimum number of service hours.
