Accessibility

We want people living with a disability to participate and feel included as valued members of our community.

It is important that you feel you belong, can connect with others, and have independence and choice in your lives.

We aim to provide our information, services, events and facilities in an inclusive, accessible, respectful and non-discriminatory way.

Our approach to disability access

  • We have developed an Access Action Plan that outlines what we will do to make Glenorchy the best place in Tasmania for people with disability to live, work and play. View the Access Action Plan 2016–2021 (PDF).
  • Our Access Advisory Committee provides advice and feedback on access issues and concerns.
  • We listen to access concerns about our property, and consider ways to resolve the issues.
  • We provide Disability Awareness Training to Council Officers, elected officials and other identified groups where appropriate.
  • We aim to be a leader in promoting the rights of people with disability, including your abilities and achievements.

We offer a ‘driver-to-collect’ service for people who are not able to place their wheelie bins at the kerbside. You will need a Doctor’s Certificate to access this service. Read more about this on our additional waste services page.

Report an access issue

Glenorchy Together

The Glenorchy Together Project is a partnership between RMIT University’s Social and Global Studies Centre, Baptcare, Glenorchy City Council, and a core group of community members who identify as having a disability.

Formed in response to the rapid and profound changes taking place in Australia’s community sector, Glenorchy Together has sought to explore two key questions:

  1. How can we best conduct community capacity building work in an NDIS environment?
  2. What conditions need to be in place to enable people with a disability to lead this kind of work?

The following report details the project’s processes, outcomes, and insights.
