2021 Mayoral and Alderman by-election results

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission has this afternoon, Wednesday, 21 July, formally announced Bec Thomas elected by the community to be Mayor of Glenorchy and Sue Hickey elected as Glenorchy Alderman.

Council would like to congratulate Bec Thomas and Sue Hickey on this outcome, as well as acknowledge all the candidates in this by-election for their outstanding efforts in representing our community. Council would also like to thank sitting Aldermen for their continued support throughout this process.

So, what happens next?

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) will issue Council a Certificate of Election to confirm the results. Then the successful candidates, Ald Thomas and Ms Hickey will take a Declaration of Office before they officially commence their new roles.

In accordance with LG (General) Regulations Bec Thomas’ former position of Deputy Mayor becomes vacant and therefore the Alderman will vote to decide who takes this position. Nominations will likely be conducted at the next Council meeting in August with a vote taking place around the Council table.

The first meeting of the new Council will take place this Monday, 26 July. Members of the public are encouraged to tune in to this on our Facebook page.
