Glenorchy City Council held its fourth Ordinary Council Meeting for 2025 on Monday 28 April 2025. All 10 Elected Members were present.
Highlights from the meeting include:
Announcements by the Chair
The Pool
Council’s funding advocacy has continued throughout the Federal election campaign. Clark Candidates have all reported that they have received many letters of support for the pool funding from the community. The mayor has recently sent another letter to all election candidates, Senators, and Mayors of neighbouring councils. If Council doesn’t secure the funding in this current election, it will not stop lobbying for the funds to redevelop the pool.
Golden Years Club
Council discussed the expressions of interest received for tenancy of the Golden Years Club building. The discussion occurred during the closed portion of the meeting due to the commercial-in-confidence information contained in the submissions. Council will advise the public of the decision as soon as possible.
Antisocial Behaviour
Council is saddened and shocked by disturbing incidents in the Glenorchy CBD recently. As a matter of priority, Council had a briefing from Tasmania Police today in relation to media commentary around these incidents. Council remains committed to working closely with Tasmania Police and support their efforts in addressing anti-social behaviour and crime in the community. Meanwhile, Council is actively working to engage with the young people of Glenorchy.
Council’s Communities Team is implementing best-practice youth engagement activities as part of Council’s role in an issue that confronts many communities all around our country.
Council have also installed additional security cameras, employed additional security staff, run round tables for businesses and stakeholders to develop strategies and continually invest in infrastructure such as the mountain bike park and the new skateparks at Montrose Foreshore and Windermere Bay.
Council believes that as a growing city it needs a youth hub. A dedicated space where young people can access vital support and services, providing them with positive engagement and pathways. Council is working tirelessly to identify the right location for a youth hub and secure the necessary funding to establish and maintain this much-needed facility.
ANZAC Day Ceremony
On 25 Apil, Council hosted its annual ANZAC Day ceremony which was attended by over 500 people. This was one of three ceremonies to honour service men and women, two of which were at Claremont. The Glenorchy ceremony included a reflection on the history of the day by Nick Murnane, President of the Claremont RSL. It also featured contributions by Your Church Pastor, David Morse, the Glenorchy City Concert Brass, the catafalque party from the 63rd Army Cadet Unit Dowsing Point, and Cody Summers who delivered the Welcome to Country.
Career and Employment Expo
The expo run by the Glenorchy Jobs Hub at MyState Arena was a huge hit bringing together over 100 exhibitors and over 2500 participants. Not only did the day provide participants with the opportunity to explore a range of job opportunities, it also provided exhibitors an opportunity to network with each other to create and strengthen business relationships.
Business Updates
A Capital Works Program update was provided and variances to project budgets were approved.
Council received the second quarterly report on Council’s progress against the Annual Plan for the 2024/2025 financial year. The report includes financial and statistical updates, as well as further information to provide context to the numbers and highlight the priority work happening across Council.
