Glenorchy City Council held its fifth Ordinary Council Meeting for 2025 on Monday 26 May 2025. 9 Elected Members were present.
Highlights from the meeting include:
Announcements by the Chair
The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool
Repair and reopen
Council is in final stages of contract negotiations with the preferred contractor for the repair of the pool. The final designs and costings have been agreed upon and we are expecting to receive the signed contract shortly. Council is committed to making a public announcement about who the contractor is, the final scope of works and costings once the contract is signed.
Redevelopment
Council did not receive a commitment to fund the redevelopment of the pool in the recent Federal election campaign. An advocacy plan has been prepared outlining steps to continue lobbying for Government funding and encourage and support community to continue its grassroots advocacy campaign. Council is determined to keep the pool top of mind for politicians and candidates in future State and Federal elections.
Glenorchy Sports Centre
The State Government have lodged a Development Application (DA) for a multipurpose sports centre on the Claremont College site. Council officers are seeking feedback from TasWater before advertising the DA for public comment.
Statement of Commitment on Community Safety
Council adopted a Statement of Commitment on Community Safety. Council has previously adopted statements of commitment on (electronic) gambling and housing to state a clear Council position on these issues, assist in advocacy efforts, and to increase community and stakeholder understanding of Council’s role.
Recent events and public discourse have seen a heightened community concern about safety. Council works closely with Tasmania Police who are responsible for law enforcement, however one of Council’s challenges has been explaining its supporting role in community safety.
The Statement of Commitment:
- affirms that Council cares about community safety and a welcoming community
- says “no” to crime and anti-social behaviour
- states that Council discharges its Local Government Act functions for the community’s safety and welfare and the City’s peace, order and good govrnance to support community safety by:
- maintaining a close relationship with Tasmania Police
- working with government, business and community organisations
- speaking up for our community
- building a stronger community
- designing and maintaining infrastructure
Business Updates
A monthly financial performance update for April was provided which keeps Council up to date with regular high level financial information. Council’s 2025/26 Waste Management Fees and Charges and schedule of fees and charges 2025/26 were also adopted ahead of the 2025/26 budget, which will be brought to Council for adoption in June.
