Glenorchy City Council held its sixth Ordinary Council Meeting for 2025 on Monday, 28 July 2025. All 10 Elected Members were present.

Highlights from the meeting include:

Announcements by the Chair

The Pool

Repair works have commenced, and an outline of a project plan has been posted on Council’s website.

Youth Engagement

Council saw good youth engagement during the recent school holidays, with many young people joining in the daily activities on the front lawns of Council.  Youth engagement is a continued commitment of Council.  Delivering programs to improve opportunities for our young people is a priority action, as is seeking funding and developing a project plan for a Glenorchy Youth Hub.

Main Road Moonah facelift

Council is planning a project to improve the amenity and functionality of the Moonah CBD. A forum to engage with traders about the Main Road Moonah Amenity Project will be hosted by Inspiring Places at the Moonah Arts Centre at 5.30pm Tuesday, 5 August.

North Chigwell Soccer Hub

On next Tuesday, 5 August 2025, Senator Carol Brown, the Glenorchy Mayor and Elected Members will officially open the North Chigwell Soccer Hub. This project has included the construction of new changerooms, clubrooms, and public amenities. It was funded by the Federal Government as part of a $12.8 million grant package that was split between KGV and this project.

Property Disposal Processes Commenced

Following an expression of interest process earlier in the year, Council has now endorsed the commencement of actions for a property swap/sale with The Salvation Army. The property sale/swap process is still subject to a number of approval processes, however, on completion of a successful process, it is intended that The Salvation Army will move into the 314 Main Road Glenorchy site (former Golden Years Club), 316, and 322 Main Road Glenorchy (former bowls and croquet club), and Council will take over their current location at 1/370 Main Road, Glenorchy. This property directly adjoins the Council forecourt which Council has identified as an ideal location to develop into a Youth Hub, and for the office space upstairs that is connected to the Council Chambers via an airbridge connection.

Council endorsed the commencement of the statutory process to dispose of part of 10 Bucaan Street, Chigwell by donation to Bucaan Community House.  Bucaan House requested the donation to support and grow their services, which serves hundreds of residents and is currently over capacity. Council supported the request on the basis that the additional land would enable Bucaan Community House to expand its facility, and with the support of external funding, continue delivering vital community services in response to growing demand in the Chigwell area.

Council also formed an intention to dispose of part of 318 Main Road, Glenorchy by an exclusive dealing to Homes Tasmania who are the State’s social and affordable housing systems provider. This process will see the sale of this land to Homes Tasmania based on an independent market valuation.  This area of land is landlocked green space on a significant slope, adjacent to the Eady Street sporting facility. Homes Tasmania intend to develop affordable housing on the underutilised land and will ensure that a well-used pedestrian walkway is maintained.

Council property disposal is a multi-step process, and these decisions commence progress for each of the land disposals. Additional reports will be brought to future Council meetings with regards to each project.
