Glenorchy City Council Proud to Support the Big Tassie Walk

Glenorchy City Council is proud to stand alongside community leaders, councils, businesses, and supporters from across the state in backing The Big Tassie Walk.

The walk is a new state-wide initiative that invites all Tasmanians to step up for a more inclusive future.

Mayor Sue Hickey welcomed the initiative, saying that Council’s support is part of our broader commitment under the We Stand Together Against Racism campaign.

“Every step taken in The Big Tassie Walk is more than just a stride towards better health – it’s a step toward building stronger, safer, and more welcoming communities for everyone,” she said.

“This campaign reflects the values we hold dear in Glenorchy – inclusion, community, and resilience.”

Launched last month, the Big Tassie Walk encourages participants to set a personal walking goal throughout October – whether that’s 45km, 90km, 180km, 335km, or any meaningful distance.

Those who choose to participate will also be raising vital funds supporting refugees and migrants to thrive here in Tasmania.

Glenorchy City Council has established a team and is encouraging the community to take part by registering online and setting a walking goal that is meaningful to them.

“We encourage everyone across our city – individuals, families, schools, businesses, and local groups – to get involved, walk together, and support the future we all believe in,” Mayor Hickey said.
