Last year’s Glenorchy Citizen of the Year, Kishor Nepal, is encouraging residents to recognise the people who make a quiet but powerful difference in our community, as nominations open for the 2026 Glenorchy Community and Volunteer Awards.
Mr Nepal said receiving the 2025 award was an unexpected honour that highlighted the strength of the community around him.
“Winning the Citizen of the Year award was a deeply humbling and meaningful experience for me,” he said.
“It reminded me that even small, consistent efforts can make a real difference, and it encouraged me to continue contributing wherever I can.”
He hopes others will take the time to nominate someone whose efforts deserve to be acknowledged.
“There are so many individuals who quietly give their time, energy and kindness without expecting recognition,” he said.
“These awards are a wonderful way to acknowledge their impact and say thank you. A nomination can mean more than you realise, and it helps shine a light on the positive work happening across our community every day.”
The awards celebrate a wide range of contributions across Glenorchy, with categories including, Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Local Hero Award and Volunteer Recognition.
Mayor Sue Hickey said the awards highlight the generosity and community spirit that define Glenorchy.
“Our city is full of people who quietly do a lot for others,” Mayor Hickey said.
“These awards give us a chance to recognise them and let them know how much they are appreciated.”
Nominations are open until 30 March, and Council’s Events team is available to support anyone who needs help with the process.
Nomination forms and further information are available at www.gcc.tas.gov.au or by contacting Council’s Events Officer on 6216 6800 or events@gcc.tas.gov.au.
