Glenorchy City Council is strengthening its efforts to keep local streets clean and welcoming, offering free graffiti removal kits to residents and businesses across the municipality.
The initiative is designed to empower the community to take quick action when graffiti appears, helping to reduce its impact and discourage repeat tagging.
The free kits are available to locals and business owners who are willing to remove graffiti from their property.
In addition to providing the kits, Council officers are also available to attend businesses in person to assist with graffiti removal.
This may include hands-on support to clean affected surfaces and, where needed, painting over damaged areas to restore their appearance.
The service is completely free.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the program reflects a shared commitment to community pride.
“Graffiti can have a real impact on how safe and welcoming our neighbourhoods feel,” she said.
“By providing free removal kits and hands-on support, we’re making it easier for residents and businesses to take quick action.
“When graffiti is removed promptly, it sends a strong message that our community cares and won’t tolerate vandalism.”
Mayor Hickey said the additional support builds on Council’s existing work.
“This initiative is being delivered on top of our ongoing graffiti removal program — not instead of it.”
“We’ll continue proactively cleaning public spaces while also working directly with locals and business owners.”
“Keeping Glenorchy clean is a shared responsibility, and we’re proud to back our community with practical support.”
Private property owners, occupiers and managers are responsible for removing graffiti on their property.
However, Council may remove graffiti on private and public property in certain circumstances, including where:
- The graffiti is located up to one metre down a driveway or laneway.
- The graffiti was applied from public land, such as a road reserve or from a public property boundary.
- The graffiti is highly visible from an arterial road or within the CBD.
- The graffiti is racist, obscene or offensive and removal is necessary to prevent public concern or anger.
- It has been determined by Council that the property owner does not have the resources to remove the graffiti.
- There is a coordinated program aimed at improving the amenity of an area through graffiti removal.
Council will not remove graffiti from sandstone or heritage-listed buildings, or from areas higher than 2.4 metres above ground level.
In these cases, a specialist should be engaged to ensure appropriate treatment.
Council may continue to assist private property owners by providing advice on graffiti removal and, where appropriate, supplying free graffiti removal kits for properties with small amounts of graffiti to support prompt clean-up.
As part of Council’s continued clean-up efforts, paver cleaning was recently completed in Moonah and sections of Glenorchy, with scheduling now underway for the next round of works.
Council is encouraging anyone interested in receiving a free graffiti removal kit to get in touch via email at gccmail@gcc.tas.gov.au, or by calling 03 6216 6800.
Our Customer Service Team will be handing the kits out, as they are available.
By working together, Council and the community can help maintain safe, attractive neighbourhoods and ensure Glenorchy remains a place everyone can be proud of.
