The Glenorchy City Council has welcomed a plan announced by the State and Federal governments for a major housing development at Dowsing Point on land currently owned by the Australian Defence Force.

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said Council was eager to see the plan proceed, adding much-needed housing to the Greater Hobart Area.

“Glenorchy is a growing city, and the creation of around 1000 homes at Dowsing Point will be a significant step in addressing housing supply.

“Council is supportive of the governments’ intentions, although we recognise much of the detail has yet to be finalised. Importantly, Council looks forward to being able to provide its input into the project through the usual planning processes and considerations.

“Council is also eager to see work continue on delivering improvements to transport infrastructure between Glenorchy and Hobart, and the advent of the Dowsing Point project should serve as further impetus for transport solutions to meet current and projected demand.

“We are extremely pleased both governments have identified this land as having the potential to deliver a significant number of new homes, as well as associated community infrastructure, such as green spaces and recreational areas.

“Council looks forward to continued updates on the project and stands ready to work with both arms of government as the project progresses,” she said.
