Glenorchy residents and visitors with high support needs will soon benefit from improved accessibility, with Glenorchy City Council announcing the installation of a Changing Places pod at the redeveloped Glenorchy War Memorial Pool.
The facility is designed to support people with disability who require additional space, equipment and assistance beyond what standard accessible toilets can provide.
Mayor Sue Hickey says the inclusion of the Pod reflects Council’s commitment to building a more inclusive community.
“This is about making sure everyone in our community has the opportunity to enjoy our public spaces with dignity and comfort,” she said.
Changing Places are recognised as a vital component of inclusive public infrastructure, enabling people with complex needs to participate more fully in community life.
Changing Places facilities are significantly larger than conventional accessible bathrooms and include specialised equipment such as a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, a ceiling-mounted hoist system, accessible toilet and shower facilities.
These features allow users to be safely and comfortably assisted, addressing a critical gap in public amenities.
“We know that for people with high support needs, access to appropriate facilities can be the difference between being able to participate or having to stay home,” Mayor Hickey said.
“Installing a Changing Places pod at the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool is a practical step towards removing those barriers.”
The installation of a pod-style unit reflects a growing trend across Australia to incorporate Changing Places into key community and recreational locations.
According to Changing Places Australia, these facilities are essential for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets, including individuals with conditions such as spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and other disabilities requiring high levels of support.
Mayor Hickey added the new pool development presented an important opportunity to embed accessibility from the outset.
“We want the Pool to be a place where everyone feels welcome,” she added.
“By including a Changing Places facility, we’re supporting families, carers and individuals to spend more time enjoying the pool and participating in community life.”
The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool redevelopment continues to stay on track and on budget, with the facility planned to reopen on 1 October 2026.
